Susana Barbera

14 Years ago in its very first collections Susana was already winning Fearless awards for fantastic documentary work we'd be proud to enter in Collection 79! An especially impressive feat when you remember these photos came first, without all of the inspiration of the 14 years of documentary wedding photography we’ve been privileged to learn from since. This was reportage before a lot of us even realised you could do that at a wedding but also this was art. A marriage many of us still struggle to achieve. Susana has done it all with the effortless ease of an artist born to do it.

Though it’s obvious from her work that you’re looking at a knowledgable and skilled photographer who is accomplished in photojournalism, street, portraits, weddings, etc, it’s not the first thing that jumps out. What jumps out at us is the feeling that these photos could only have come from one person. If a writer strives to write in her own blood, Susana has managed the equivalent in photographs. These photographs are never about the camera, it’s just how she shows us her soul.

We all know by now that every creative journey ultimately comes back to the same simple message - find your own voice. In Susana, we have someone we can all see figured that out years ago while also dedicating countless hours as an educator and mentor helping others to do the same. It’s about time we brought that magic to Doc Day really.
